Crunchy, sweet and spicy with a hint of orange zest. A mouth-watering dish bound to please!

  • 1 packet Original Crispy Batter
  • 3 small apples (mix of green and red)
  • 250ml beer or soda water
  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp mixed spice
  • Juice of 1 large orange
  • Zest of 1 large orange
  • 2 cups rice bran oil (for deep frying)
  • Melted chocolate to drizzle (optional)

  1. Wash, peel and dice apples into small pieces. Add to a large bowl and drizzle with lemon juice. Set aside.
  2. In a deep pot add the rice bran oil. Make sure the oil is at least 4cm deep. Heat up until 180°C.
  3. While the oil is heating up, make the batter. Add 1 whole packet of Easy Beer Batter to a big bowl. Add 250 ml of beer and mix well.
  4. Add in the cinnamon and mixed spice to the batter mixture, grate the orange zest straight into the bowl and then cut the orange in half and squeeze the juice in. Mix well.
  5. Add the diced apples into the batter mixture and stir through well.
  6. Once the oil is at temperature, take a cookie scooper or use a metal 1⁄4 cup to scoop the batter into the oil, one fritter at a time.
  7. Cook for 30 seconds before turning and cooking for a further 30 seconds.
  8. Place cooked fritters on a paper towel to absorb excess oil.
  9. Optional: Melt some chocolate in the microwave in 10 second bursts and drizzle over the fritters. Yum!
