Five Spice Salt & Pepper Chicken

Chinese-inspired flavours with a crispy tempura batter coating. A delicious side dish or meal served with rice and sautéd veggies. 


  • 450g chicken thigh cut into chunks
  • Sliced nori sheets
  • 1 cup Tasty Tempura Batter
  • 1 cup iced water

  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Chinese cooking wine
  • 1 tsp 5-spice powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp ground white pepper

    Spice mix:
  • ⅛ tsp white pepper
  • ¼ tsp brown sugar
  • ⅛ tsp salt
  • ⅛ tsp 5-spice powder


  1. Cover chicken with marinade ingredients and leave for at least 30min before cooking.
  2. Heat the oil in the pan.
  3. Add a few ice cubes to 1 cup of water and let it stand for a few minutes. Remove the ice cubes and add the ice cold water to the tempura mix and combine until smooth .
  4. Dip the chicken pieces into the tempura batter mix and lower into the hot oil.
  5. Fry for about 7 minutes .
  6. Transfer to drain on a wire rack .
  7. Repeat with the remaining chicken .
  8. Sprinkle the spice mix and sliced nori strips on top of the chicken to serve. Enjoy!
